Hip Pain

Expert Treatment in Bromley & Shortlands

Hip pain can present in several different ways — pain at the front of the hip and groin, pain over the outer hip, or pain radiating into the buttock and thigh. Because the hip joint sits deep within the pelvis and connects to the lower back, knee, and pelvic muscles, an accurate diagnosis requires looking at how the whole region moves together.

At Physio Squared, hip assessment includes a full biomechanical evaluation of the pelvis, lower back, and lower limb, since hip pain often has contributing factors beyond the joint itself.

What Causes Hip Pain?

Muscle weakness or imbalance Weakness in the gluteal muscles or an imbalance between the muscles controlling the hip is one of the most common underlying causes of hip pain, particularly pain felt over the outer hip.

Overuse or repetitive strain Activities involving repeated hip flexion — running, cycling, certain gym exercises — can lead to irritation of the tendons and structures around the hip joint, especially following a change in training volume.

Joint stiffness or degeneration Reduced range of movement in the hip joint, whether from stiffness or early degenerative changes, alters movement patterns throughout the lower limb and can be a source of pain in its own right.

Common Hip Conditions Treated

Gluteal tendinopathy Pain over the outer hip, often worse when lying on that side or during walking and stairs. One of the most common causes of lateral hip pain, frequently misdiagnosed as bursitis.

Hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement) A condition where the ball and socket of the hip joint make abnormal contact during movement, causing pain — typically in the groin — with deep hip flexion movements such as squatting.

Osteoarthritis Degenerative changes within the hip joint causing stiffness and pain, usually worse after rest and with prolonged activity. Physiotherapy — particularly targeted strengthening — is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for hip osteoarthritis.

How Hip Pain is Treated

Strengthening exercises Progressive strengthening of the gluteal and surrounding hip muscles, tailored to address the specific weaknesses identified in your assessment.

Movement correction Addressing movement patterns during walking, running, or single-leg activities that may be contributing to ongoing hip irritation.

Hands-on treatment Manual therapy to address joint stiffness and soft tissue restriction, improving range of movement and reducing pain.
